“I don’t know that woman! Get her out!”
My fiancé’s voice echoed through the chapel so loudly that the pianist stopped playing.
We were standing at the altar.
Our wedding guests had already risen for the ceremony, and the officiant was about to lead us through our vows.
Then the doors at the back of the chapel opened.
A woman in a dark green dress stood in the doorway, holding something against her chest.
And Ryan, the man I was seconds away from marrying, looked absolutely terrified.
“Ryan?” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
He was staring at the woman.
“Who let you in here?” he demanded.
The woman stepped forward.
“Ryan, please. I need to talk to her.”
He shook his head.
“I have no idea who you are.”
She stopped walking.
For a second, I thought she might cry.
Instead, she looked directly at me.
“My name is Hannah Blake.”
I tightened my grip on my bouquet.
“Okay?”
“I’m sorry to interrupt your wedding.”
Ryan took a step toward her.
“Then leave.”
Hannah didn’t move.
“I can’t.”
A murmur spread through the chapel.
I could feel every pair of eyes turning toward us.
This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
I’d spent months planning every detail, from the white roses in my bouquet to the music that was supposed to play when we exchanged rings.
Ryan and I had been together for four years.
We’d been engaged for almost two.
I’d trusted him with everything.
So when he reached for my hand and said, “”Emily, she’s clearly confused. Let’s not turn this into a scene,”” I almost listened.
Almost.
But something about the way he was acting bothered me.
Ryan wasn’t usually the kind of man who lost his temper in public.
He could talk his way through practically anything.
Yet the moment this woman appeared, he’d gone from smiling at me to shouting at someone he claimed he’d never met.
“Who is she?” I asked.
“I told you. I don’t know.”
“Then why are you so angry?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because she’s ruining our wedding.”
Hannah let out a shaky breath.
“Emily, he knows exactly who I am.”
Ryan turned toward her.
“Stop talking.”
That was when I noticed the photograph.
She was holding it so tightly that the edges had begun to bend.
“What do you have there?” I asked.
Hannah looked down.
“Something you need to see.”
Ryan moved toward her again.
“You’re not showing her anything.”
I stepped between them.
“Ryan. Stop.””For the first time since we’d met, I saw an expression on his face that I couldn’t recognize.
Not anger.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
“Emily,” he said quietly, “whatever she’s told you, it isn’t true.”
“She hasn’t told me anything yet.”
He looked away.
I turned back to Hannah.
“Tell me why you’re here.”
She swallowed.
“Because he was standing at another altar with me last month.”
My heart seemed to stop.
For several seconds, I couldn’t make sense of the words.
Another altar?
With her?
I looked at Ryan.
He gave a short, nervous laugh.
“That’s ridiculous.”
Hannah stared at him.
“You really are going to pretend it never happened?”
“I’ve never seen you before.”
“You kissed me in front of our families.”
“Enough!”
His shout made me flinch.
A guest in the front row shifted uncomfortably.
Somebody farther back whispered something, but I couldn’t understand the words.
All I could hear was my heartbeat.
Then a memory surfaced.
About a month earlier, Ryan had gone away for a weekend.
He’d told me he was taking a fishing trip with an old friend.
There had been almost no cell service, he’d said.
He hadn’t called.
When he returned, he’d brushed off my questions and said there wasn’t much to tell.
I’d thought nothing of it.
Now I was standing in a wedding gown, wondering why I could barely remember a single detail about where he’d been.
“Ryan,” I said, “where exactly did you go that weekend?”
He stared at me.
“What weekend?”
“The fishing trip.”
His expression hardened.
“Emily, are you seriously doing this right now?”
It wasn’t an answer.
Hannah held out the photograph.
“Please. Just look.”
Ryan reached toward my arm.
“Don’t.”
I pulled away.
“Let me see.”
He lowered his hand.
Slowly, I walked toward Hannah.
Up close, she looked exhausted. Her eyes were red, and her fingers were trembling around the glossy print.
But she wasn’t smiling.
She wasn’t enjoying the attention.
She looked like someone who had spent the entire drive here trying not to fall apart.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Then she held the photograph out to me.
I took it.
At first, I noticed the flowers.
White roses and pale greenery surrounded a wooden wedding arch.
There was a woman in a white bridal gown.
Hannah.
Her auburn hair was pinned back, and she was smiling with her eyes closed.
A man in a navy suit had his arms around her.
They were kissing.
I knew the man’s face before my mind was willing to accept it.
The same dark hair.
The same jawline.
The same face I’d woken up beside for four years.
Ryan.
My Ryan.
I heard Hannah speak from somewhere beside me.
“That was our wedding. Last month.”
The photograph shook in my hands.
I looked from the printed image to the man waiting at the altar.
He wasn’t smiling anymore.
He wasn’t even pretending to be confused.
He just stared at the photograph.
I walked back toward him and turned it so he could see.
“Ryan.”
His eyes lifted to mine.
“That’s you.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
My bouquet slowly lowered to my side.
Behind me, the chapel had gone completely silent.
The photograph showed the man I was about to marry kissing another bride beneath a wedding arch.
And the woman standing behind me claimed it had happened only one month earlier.
Ryan’s face drained of color.
For the first time that afternoon, he looked as though he had absolutely no idea what to say.
And I was still holding the photograph.
