3. Part 3 — The Suspicion Started Before Matthew Was Born

I barely slept that night.

Matthew woke often. Nurses came in to check both of us. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the dark pigment on his tiny fingers.

But Carol’s message had added something else to the room: a question I could not ignore.

The next morning, I asked Andrew to call my mother.

I did not want to see Theresa alone, and I did not want the conversation postponed until weeks later when everyone had time to build a more comfortable version of events.

I wanted to know what Carol meant now.

Theresa came in with swollen eyes and stayed near the door. She did not try to hug me.

“Sit down,” I said.

Andrew showed her the message.

“My mother says you already knew Matthew might not look like me. What does that mean?”

Theresa closed her eyes for one brief second.

That was enough for me to understand there was something she had never told us.

“It does not mean what Carol thinks it means,” she said.

“Then what does it mean?”

My mother clasped her hands together.

“When Emily was about five months pregnant, Carol called me. She said she thought the baby looked strange on the ultrasound, and that Andrew looked completely different as a newborn.”

I stared at her.

“Why did you never tell me?”

“Because I told her it was ridiculous.”

Andrew remained silent.

Theresa continued.

“Then she started asking about our family. Whether your grandfather was really your grandfather. Whether we had relatives with darker skin. I told her there was a Sicilian great-grandfather on my father’s side who was very dark-complexioned, and that you had almost black hair when you were born. I was trying to shut the conversation down.”

“And what did she say?” I asked.

Theresa looked at the floor.

“She said that meant a baby could be born looking very different from both parents.”

Carol’s message suddenly made sense in a different way.

She did not have proof of anything.

She had spent months collecting ordinary scraps of information, bending them around her obsession, and then using them to support a story she had already decided was true.

“Then why did you believe her yesterday?” I asked my mother.

Theresa did not hide behind an excuse.

“Because when I walked in and saw Matthew covered like that, I remembered the phone call. Carol was shouting that you had lied. I thought…”

“You thought your daughter was capable of deceiving her husband and handing him another man’s baby as his own.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt, but at least it was not another lie.

Andrew stood and went to the window.

“My mother created the thing she later treated as proof,” he said. “She asked questions for months, collected innocent information, and turned it into suspicion.”

Theresa nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you helped her without realizing what she was building.”

My mother lowered her head.

I looked at Matthew. He was sleeping with both hands near his face, completely unaware that adults had already turned his appearance into a battlefield.

“I don’t ever want anyone discussing who he looks like in front of him as if it proves something about who belongs to whom,” I said. “Ever.”

Andrew came back to the bed.

“I agree.”

My mother took a small step toward me.

“Emily, can I—”

“No.”

She stopped.

“Not today. You do not get to go from hitting me to hugging me because you realized you were wrong.”

Tears filled her eyes, but she nodded.

Later, we received a preliminary update about the substance.

The doctor said it appeared to be a cosmetic pigment mixed with an oily cream. Matthew showed no immediate respiratory problems, eye irritation, or other signs of acute injury. Everything would still be documented in his chart, and we were given symptoms to watch for over the next several days.

I felt relief.

I did not feel forgiveness.

Knowing my baby appeared to be okay did not make what happened acceptable.

That afternoon, Andrew got a call from his father, Paul, who had been out of town for work and had only learned what happened that morning.

Andrew put the call on speaker.

He said he was done with side conversations.

“Your mother says you had her thrown out of the hospital,” Paul said.

Andrew looked at me before answering.

“Security removed her because she covered Matthew in pigment while Emily was asleep.”

A long silence followed.

“She did what?”

Andrew told him everything without softening it.

When he finished, Paul let out a heavy breath.

“I didn’t know she would take it this far.”

I sat straighter.

“What does that mean?” I asked. “That you didn’t know she would take it this far?”

Paul seemed to realize too late what he had revealed.

Andrew picked up the phone.

“Dad?”

“For the last few months, your mother talked about the baby a lot. She kept saying something didn’t add up. I told her to let it go.”

“You knew she suspected Emily?”

“I knew she was asking questions. I did not know she planned to…”

Andrew cut in.

“Have you ever seen the cream she used?”

Paul did not answer immediately.

Then he said, “Two days ago, I found a container of very dark theatrical foundation in the bathroom. I asked what it was for. She told me a friend needed it for a costume.”

The room went quiet in a new way.

Carol had not improvised at the hospital.

She had bought the material before Matthew was born.

Andrew rubbed a hand over his face.

“Dad, I need you to keep anything that could be related to this. Receipts. Packaging. Messages. Don’t throw anything away.”

“Andrew…”

“I’m not asking you to choose between your wife and me. I’m asking you not to erase what happened to my son.”

Paul said he would keep everything.

After the call, I sat quietly for a long time.

Then I looked at Andrew.

“Your mother decided to do this before Matthew was even born.”

He nodded slowly.

That was the real shift.

Until then, we had been dealing with one terrible act.

Now we knew it had been planned.

And if Carol had planned the act, one question remained: what exactly had she expected to gain if Andrew believed our son was not his?

That night, Andrew told me something else.

As a teenager, he had watched his mother turn small doubts into absolute conclusions. A late arrival became disrespect. A choice she did not like became rejection. He learned to tell her less, because information often became ammunition.

Realizing she had applied the same pattern to me and then to Matthew forced him to look at his childhood differently.

I did not want the pain of that recognition to become one more thing I was responsible for fixing.

I told him he could talk whenever he wanted, and that he did not have to defend anyone with me.

Andrew sat beside Matthew’s bassinet for a long time.

Before turning out the light, he said he would call his father again the next day and ask him to tell us everything he remembered.

No more protecting Carol from her own words.
