The slap echoed across the Grand Atoria ballroom like a gunshot.
For one terrible second, Abigail Foster couldn’t move.
Then the silver tray slipped from her fingers.
Six champagne flutes crashed onto the marble floor, sending broken crystal and golden liquid across the polished tiles.
Abigail staggered backward, instinctively wrapping one arm around her seven-month-pregnant belly.
Her cheek burned.
Across from her, Vanessa Sinclair stared at the spilled champagne.
“Wonderful.”
Her voice dripped with contempt.
“You almost ruined my dress.”
Abigail swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry, ma’am.”
Vanessa looked her up and down.
“Of course you are. People like you are always sorry after you’ve already caused a problem.”
The orchestra had stopped playing.
Around them, wealthy donors and elegantly dressed guests watched in uncomfortable silence.
Nobody stepped forward.
Nobody asked whether Abigail was hurt.
Because Vanessa Sinclair wasn’t just another spoiled guest.
She was the daughter of Richard Sinclair, one of Manhattan’s most influential billionaires.
The Sinclair family donated millions to hospitals, museums, and charitable foundations. Their name appeared on buildings throughout New York.
Vanessa had grown up knowing that her father’s money could make uncomfortable situations disappear.
And everyone in that ballroom seemed determined not to become her next problem.
Abigail lowered her eyes.
She couldn’t afford to lose this job.
Rent was due, her savings were almost gone, and in two months she would have a baby to care for.
Her back already ached from hours of standing.
But she carefully lowered herself toward the broken glass.
“I’ll clean it up.”
Vanessa laughed.
“That’s probably the first intelligent thing you’ve said tonight.”
Abigail reached for the edge of her tray.
Then she realized something had fallen from her uniform.
Her employee badge.
The plastic clip had snapped when she stumbled.
Before she could retrieve it, a polished black shoe appeared beside the badge.
The surrounding conversations stopped completely.
Abigail looked up.
A tall man in a black tuxedo stood before her.
Matteo Romano.
Even people who had never met him knew his face.
At thirty-seven, Matteo controlled a business empire spanning luxury hotels, shipping operations, and real estate.
Newspapers described him as a brilliant billionaire entrepreneur.
Law enforcement agencies had spent years examining the less public parts of his business relationships.
But whatever people believed about Matteo Romano, they agreed on one thing.
He wasn’t a man anyone wanted to offend.
Abigail immediately lowered her gaze.
“I’m sorry, sir. I’ll have this cleaned up.”
Matteo didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the red mark spreading across her cheek.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
For a moment, his expression revealed absolutely nothing.
He turned back toward Abigail.
And did something nobody expected.
He bent one knee.
Right there, in the middle of the ballroom, Matteo Romano knelt on the marble floor.
The photographers near the donor tables raised their cameras.
Richard Sinclair noticed immediately.
Matteo picked up the broken employee badge.
He studied the name printed across the plastic.
ABIGAIL FOSTER.
His hand stopped moving.
The change in his expression was subtle, but unmistakable.
“Your name is Abigail?”
She blinked.
“Yes, sir.”
“Abigail Foster?”
“That’s right.”
He looked at her face more carefully.
Not with the cold scrutiny of an employer examining a mistake.
It was the expression of someone desperately trying to recognize a face from an old memory.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Matteo, if you’re concerned about the mess, management can replace her. There’s no reason to make a scene.”
He ignored her.
One of his security men stepped forward with a replacement badge clip.
Matteo took it.
Then, with remarkable care, he reattached Abigail’s name badge to her uniform.
He avoided pulling the fabric stretched across her pregnant belly.
Abigail stared at him, confused.
“Thank you, sir.”
Matteo stood.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Apologize.”
She blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“To her.”
Vanessa gave a disbelieving laugh.
“Matteo, surely you’re joking.”
He didn’t smile.
“You struck a pregnant woman.”
“She nearly spilled champagne on me!”
Matteo looked directly into her eyes.
“And you believe those things are equally important?”
A few guests exchanged nervous glances.
Vanessa’s smile tightened.
“You don’t understand. She was careless.”
“I understand exactly what I saw.”
Richard Sinclair began walking toward them.
“Matteo, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”
“No.”
One quiet word.
Richard stopped.
The ballroom was silent enough for Abigail to hear the faint sound of the broken glass shifting beneath a guest’s shoe.
Vanessa folded her arms again.
“Honestly, Matteo. You don’t even know this woman.”
For the first time, something changed in his face.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
He glanced at Abigail.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
Abigail frowned.
Matteo spoke again, his voice quieter now.
“I’ve been looking for her for almost eight years.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Richard’s expression changed.
And Abigail felt a strange uneasiness rise in her chest.
“I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else,” she whispered.
Matteo shook his head.
“No.”
He looked into her eyes.
“Eight years ago, my younger sister was seventeen.”
Abigail’s breathing slowed.
“She was involved in a terrible highway accident. It was raining. The doctors said she needed emergency surgery immediately.”
Matteo paused.
“Her blood type was rare. They were struggling to find enough compatible blood.”
Abigail went completely still.
Suddenly, she remembered.
The sharp smell of antiseptic.
The bright hospital lights.
A frightened nurse explaining that a teenage girl was fighting for her life.
She had been much younger then, but she could still remember rolling up her sleeves.
And she remembered a girl lying on a hospital bed, terrified.
Matteo watched her expression.
“You remember.”
Abigail couldn’t speak.
“You donated blood,” he continued.
“You refused compensation. You left before my family arrived.”
His voice grew unsteady.
“We had incomplete information. We tried to find you afterward, but every lead went nowhere.”
Abigail pressed a hand against her chest.
“I didn’t know her name.”
“Her name is Isabella.”
Matteo glanced toward the orchestra.
“Isabella Romano.”
A young woman in an elegant black dress was standing a few feet away.
Her long dark hair framed a face already wet with tears.
She had apparently been listening.
Abigail looked at her.
The woman approached slowly.
And suddenly, Abigail recognized those eyes.
Eight years earlier, they had been filled with terror beneath the harsh hospital lights.
Now they were filled with tears.
Isabella stopped in front of her.
“You told me I was going to be okay.”
Abigail covered her mouth.
She remembered holding the frightened teenager’s hand.
She remembered telling her to keep fighting.
She had never expected to see her again.
Isabella began to cry.
“You stayed until they took me into surgery.”
Abigail’s eyes filled with tears.
Behind them, Vanessa Sinclair stood motionless.
But it was her father who looked the most shaken.
Richard Sinclair was no longer simply embarrassed by his daughter’s behavior.
He was staring at Matteo Romano, and the color was draining from his face.
Because he was beginning to understand exactly whom his daughter had just humiliated.
And why Matteo Romano would never forget it.
