“Don’t open the coffin. We’ve already said goodbye. Just cover it up and get this over with.”
That was my husband’s voice.
And I was lying inside the coffin he wanted buried.
My name is Samantha Hale. I’m thirty-six years old, and until that moment, I believed I knew the man I’d been married to for nearly nine years.
I had no idea how wrong I was.
I woke in complete darkness, lying on something hard and narrow. My hands were folded across my chest, and the air smelled overwhelmingly of flowers.
I tried to open my eyes. Nothing happened.
I tried moving my fingers. Nothing.
I tried screaming, but my mouth wouldn’t cooperate.
I could hear everything. I could think clearly. I could barely breathe.
But my body refused to move.
Then I felt the surface beneath me shift.
Someone was carrying me.
A terrible realization settled over me.
I was inside a coffin.
My last clear memory was dinner at our home in Savannah. Christian had been unusually attentive that evening. Pamela, my best friend, had stopped by with some paperwork she said needed my signature.
I remembered feeling dizzy after dinner.
I remembered Christian catching me as my knees buckled.
“Easy, sweetheart,” he’d whispered. “You probably ate something that didn’t agree with you.”
That was the last thing I remembered.
Until I woke up in darkness.
I couldn’t tell how much time had passed. The next thing I knew, the coffin was being lowered into a quiet place where I could hear birds and distant traffic.
Then someone spoke.
“Nobody else from the family coming?”
The voice belonged to an older man.
“No,” Christian answered. “We wanted to keep this private.”
“Not even her relatives?”
“There’s nobody else who needs to be here.”
I wanted to scream that he was lying.
I had friends. Cousins. Neighbors who’d known me for years.
Why weren’t any of them there?
Then I heard Pamela.
“Finally,” she murmured. “Once this is over, we can stop pretending.”
Christian gave a quiet laugh.
“Nine years, Pam. Nine years of putting up with all of this.”
“At least it’ll be worth it.”
“The rental houses alone are worth a fortune. And that waterfront place her father left her? We won’t have to worry about money again.”
For a moment, I forgot to breathe.
My father had died two years earlier. He’d left me several rental properties, investment accounts, and a beautiful house on Wilmington Island.
Everything was in my name.
Christian had always insisted he didn’t care about any of it.
Now I knew why.
And Pamela, the woman I’d trusted with my deepest secrets, was standing beside him.
I finally understood their relationship.
The private conversations. The whispered phone calls. The way Pamela suddenly seemed to know things about my marriage I had never told her.
They hadn’t just betrayed me.
They were trying to erase me.
The older man spoke again.
“Are you sure you don’t want the casket opened for one last look?”
My entire mind screamed.
Yes! Please! Open it!
I struggled against whatever was keeping my body motionless.
Nothing.
Christian answered immediately.
“No. We’ve already said goodbye. She wouldn’t have wanted a big production.”
“All right, then.”
Footsteps moved away.
I heard machinery shifting, followed by the low groan of straps tightening beneath the coffin.
Then I felt myself descending.
I was being lowered into the ground.
Panic swallowed every thought.
My mother had died years earlier. My father was gone, too. And the person I’d trusted most in the world was standing above me, waiting for me to disappear.
I thought about the last time I’d seen my father’s face.
I thought about our house, the photographs, my unfinished life.
And I wondered whether anyone would ever know what Christian had done.
Then dirt struck the wooden lid.
A soft, hollow sound.
Another handful followed.
Then another.
I was running out of time.
Suddenly, a dog barked.
Not a casual bark.
It was sharp, frantic, insistent.
“Barnaby! Come here!” the older man called.
The dog refused.
I heard claws scraping against the ground. Then a thump landed directly above me.
The barking sounded closer.
Much closer.
“Barnaby, get out of there!”
The animal began scratching frantically at the coffin lid.
For a moment, everyone stopped talking.
I concentrated on my right hand.
Move.
Nothing.
Please. Just one finger.
Something twitched.
At first, I thought I’d imagined it.
Then my index finger moved again.
A surge of hope rushed through me.
I strained against the terrible heaviness in my muscles. Pain shot through my wrist, but I managed to raise my hand a fraction of an inch.
I pressed my knuckles against the wood.
And knocked.
Once.
Barely loud enough for me to hear.
The dog stopped barking.
“What was that?” the older man asked.
Nobody answered.
Christian spoke from somewhere above.
“Probably the casket settling. Let’s finish.”
But the dog started scratching again.
I gathered every bit of strength I had left.
And knocked a second time.
Louder.
Three seconds passed.
Then I heard the older man’s shovel fall.
“Oh, my God.”
His voice sounded different now.
Terrified.
“Zach!” he shouted. “Get back here! Help me get this coffin out!”
There was a sudden rush of footsteps.
A shovel scraped against the wood above my face as the workers began pulling away the fresh dirt.
For the first time since waking up, I understood that someone might actually save me.
But I was thinking about something else, too.
Christian believed I was already dead.
He believed my inheritance would soon belong to him and Pamela.
And he had no idea that I had heard every word.
As the men scrambled to retrieve my coffin, I made myself one promise.
If I got out of that grave alive, my husband would regret what he’d done for the rest of his life.
Then I heard metal striking the edge of the coffin.
And the first unmistakable sound of someone trying to lift me out.
